Berdasarkan pada pesawat trainer dua-tempat duduk Su-27UB dan pada awalnya dikenal sebagai Su-27PU, Su-30 adalah pesawat tempur presisi jarak-jauh yang similar dengan F-15E Eagles. Walaupun mempertahankan kemampuan interceptor udara-ke-udara dari Su-27, Model awal Su30 dan Su-30K dioptimasi untuk misi enduransi panjang 10 jam atau lebih. Pesawat jenis ini dilengkapi dengan sistem radiolocation yang memungkinkan pelacakan hingga 10 target dalam waktu bersamaan. Fitur ini membuat Su-30 cocok sebagai pemimpin pesawat tempur taktis sebagai target buruan dari pesawat musuh.
